Last week, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced a reweighting of the Cost category for the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) 2020 performance year. Previously weighted at 15% of a clinician or group’s total MIPS score, the Cost category for the 2020 performance year will now be weighted at 0%.
The 15% has been redistributed to the Quality and Promoting Interoperability categories, which are now weighted at 55% and 30%, respectively.
These changes are effective for all MIPS eligible clinicians for the 2020 performance period, regardless of whether they participated as individuals, in a group or virtual group, or as part of an alternative payment model (APM).
